Pastor

St Timothy is in a transition time as we look for a new pastor.  During this time, we are blessed with Cumberland Presbyterian Ministers, or church lay leaders, who preach the message from God's word and encourage our walk of faith. This is an exciting time for St Timothy as we pray together and seek the pastor God has for us.

Our Beliefs

  • The Trinity: We believe in God as Creator and Caretaker; in Jesus Christ as divine Savior and Lord; and in the Holy Spirit as God present and at work everywhere in creation.
  • Sin and Salvation: Human beings disobey God, like Adam and Eve, and are in need of spiritual rebirth. God initiates salvation, sending the Holy Spirit to all persons, calling them to repentance and faith. They have a choice of acceptance or rejection. “Whoever believes” is redeemed. We are not, nor have we ever been, Predestinarian. Persons are set into right relations with God by faith, and not by works. Salvation is a gift of God’s grace, not something earned or merited.
  • Christian Growth: Beginning Christians are like babes in Christ; they have only just been born. All Christians need to grow continually throughout their years in capacity to receive God’s grace, and in the ability to live the Christian life.
  • The Bible: The holy scriptures are the 66 books contained in the Old and New Testaments. They tell the story of our faith in all its richness. As we read and study the scriptures through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we find ourselves addressed by God and God’s purposes for us and the world. As such, the scriptures are the authoritative guide for Christian living. We do not limit ourselves to any one translation of the Bible but seek always for a deeper understanding of God’s word addressing us through the words of scripture.
  • The Church: The Cumberland Presbyterian Church considers itself to be a part of the Holy Universal Church, consisting of all who have made covenant with God through Jesus Christ. We are not sectarian. We are one of the many communions who belong to God.
  • The Sacraments: The Sacraments are celebrations of the covenant in which Christ mysteriously is present and active. We accept two Sacraments, Baptism and the Lord’s Supper or Holy Communion. Through God’s presence, work, and will, they are made effective. The elements of water, fruit of the vine, and bread are signs and symbols and remain what they are. The Sacraments are not essential to salvation but are necessary means of grace. The Sacraments are central to Christian worship.
  • Death and Resurrection: We do not believe in the natural immortality of the soul. Eternal life is a gift from God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. We are raised with him through our conversion. Eternal life is a living relation with God (John 17:3) which continues more completely after death when full redemption shall be ours in the resurrection of the body.
  • End of Days: The Cumberland Presbyterian Church accepts what the Bible says about heaven and hell, though the Confession of Faith speaks but briefly about them. There is a divergence of opinions concerning these concepts. There is no full statement in the Confession of Faith about the Last Days and the Second Coming of Christ. No speculation is done about the time and manner of these events. However, Cumberland Presbyterians declare in the final words of the Confession of Faith, “in the consummation of history, at the coming of Jesus Christ, the kingdoms of the world shall become the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.”

What is Cumberland?

Whosoever Will May Come (John 3:16; Revelations 22:17)

Our History

The Cumberland Presbyterian Church denomination was founded in 1810 in Dickson County, Tennessee (near Nashville), by a group of Presbyterians who were heading west to settle the frontier. Born out of the early 1800’s Great Revival with a desire to go out and reach all that need Christ, the denomination has retained that “whosoever will come” approach to evangelism and outreach. The denomination has approximately 670 congregations worldwide, with ministries in 18 countries. The largest concentration of churches is in Tennessee, followed by Alabama, Texas, Kentucky and Arkansas.

St. Timothy Cumberland Presbyterian Church (CPC) was founded in 1970, at a time when Bedford was experiencing rapid residential growth. It was then a few people with a deep love for Christ and others stepped forward in faith, community and fellowship to establish St. Timothy CPC, bringing with them a wonderful spirit of worship, praise and fellowship. We lovingly follow in their footsteps of faith and fellowship, as we also continue to serve and support global and local ministries. Locally, this includes our St Timothy Preschool that was established as an outreach to the community, continuing for 40 years and still serving our Bedford and surrounding communities.

What People Are Saying

Beverly B: “I first went to the craft fair for several years, held in October. Then I decided to attend a worship service… St. Timothy felt like home. You can feel God’s presence when you walk in the doors. The church family has a heart for ministering to those in need. …”

Kathy H: “St. Timothy is home. As charter members our wedding was the first service held at St. Timothy. Our two children received infant baptism, joined the church and were married here and our three grandchildren received infant baptism here as well. As well as the spiritual guidance we receive by attending St. Timothy we benefit from belonging to this great Family of God. We celebrate and mourn together. If we need help a St. Timothy family member is just a telephone call away. We are never alone….”

Stephen & Rachel H: “We are blessed with a loving church family where in all occasions the members share the joys and comfort the sorrows. Our children grew up in this church and enjoyed all kinds of programs and activities. Our church also has been very active in helping those in need and serving our community. We love our church and feel it is a sweet home to us. May we spread the love of Jesus through St. Timothy programs to wherever we go.”

Judy F: I can’t remember the exact year I first visited St. Timothy CPC, but I do know that I was invited and encouraged to attend by one of St. Timothy’s members while I was in elementary school. I continued to visit occasionally throughout high school and when faced with life’s difficult challenges that so often come with young adulthood, I returned seeking God’s guidance, comfort and direction. St. Timothy provided a solid foundation to me along with a loving and caring church family who I continue to care for to this day. Throughout the years, I have been encouraged to grow in my faith through Bible Study and have been given the opportunity to serve God’s kingdom by learning, leading, teaching and volunteering in various capacities. No doubt, my life has been enriched, and my faith has grown, by being a member of this congregation. God’s love is ever present here and is evident in those I call my St. Timothy family. If you are seeking a church where you can learn about God’s word, grow in your commitment to Him and His people, and feel His love, I encourage you to visit St. Timothy. Our doors and His table are open to all, and we would love to have you join us.

Lauren A: I have called St. Timothy's my home church since 2001. I attended the preschool and my family joined the church soon after. Growing up through the preschool and St. Tim's children and youth ministry has developed a strong base in faith and knowledge of Jesus's love for me. My years in college really revealed the impact of this, as I encountered new and sometimes uncertain situations. In these times, I had the community of St. Tim's, and their model of God's love, to lean on for guidance. St. Tim's has so many opportunities to serve both within the church and surrounding community. Having these opportunities though NEED, church service, and community events developed a love for service for me and helped me find how my skills could best be used in God's plan. What brings me back to St. Tim's even now is the congregation and the saturation of God's love I feel when we praise through music, and genuinely commune with each other each week. The sermons challenge me, and the love fuels me.

Lynn A: In 2001, my family and St. Timothy CPC found each other through the church’s mom’s day out program (now a preschool program). With our three children, we experienced how well this Bible-based and love-focused preschool reflects the foundation and mission of the church itself. When my in-laws moved to Texas in 2005, they also were drawn to St. Timothy CPC, its mix of traditional and contemporary styles of worship and music, as well as the many opportunities to serve the church and community. We agree that St. Timothy CPC is a special place for families and individuals to find and worship God, a community where all are truly welcome and energized to learn of God’s love, to grow in Christian faith and to bring the message of Jesus Christ to others.

Heather M: Have you ever stepped into a place and felt instantly at home? That’s the way it felt for me and my mom when we visited St. Timothy. I had just moved back to the mid-cities after many years away, found a house that became our home, and we began searching and praying for our new church family. Thinking I knew best, I restricted my search to a small radius near my home, but God had other plans. After a few weeks, it was mom who asked, “Is there a Cumberland Presbyterian church in the area? They really believe ‘whosoever will may come’ and my friend wrote a book about the Cumberland church history in Arkansas. “ And, that is when we found St. Timothy. It was the sense of welcome and the warmth of the people that drew us in, and then their love for God and others that made St. Timothy our church home and family. We are thankful God lead us here to worship, serve others, and grow in His light. All together we study His Word, sing to God’s glory, and share the Good News of Jesus’ love. Thank you, Lord.

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and will be opened to you. And the door will be opened. Matthew 7:7
